What’s “Setsubun” ?

” Devils out, happiness in!! “

In Japan, February 3rd is “Setsubun day.” On rare occasions, there are years to become “February 2” and “February 4”.
Setsubun is one of the noodles, the day before the beginning of each season (the beginning of spring, summer, autumn, winter). Especially after the Edo period(1603~1867), the day before the beginning of spring (around February 4 every year) is the New Year’s Eve of the lunar calendar.
Since the beginning of spring (※) is determined by the angle of the sun, it may be around the year. (The day when the angle of the sun reached 315 degrees) The words of Setsubun also mean “to divide the seasons”.

We will decorate Mame-maki, Ehoumaki(sushi) and eagle without evils. These differ depending on region and shrine.

◆◇【History of Setsubun 】◇◆

It was thought that evil (ogre) would occur at the turn of the season, a demonic event held out to drive it off.
The event at Setsubun is an annual event in the imperial palace, born from the “chasing” that has been taking place since around the Heian period(794 – 1192).

According to the “next Nippon”, it was changed to faith to “peach branch” which started in 706 and was used in the Muromachi period(1338 – 1573), and it was an event to drive away the demons with roasted beans.
According to “Crucifixion Record”, in 1447 he spoke “Devils out, happiness in!! ”.

◆◇【The meaning and origin of Setsubun】◇◆

Setsubun (Lunar New Year’s Eve) of the lunar calendar pursued injuries and disasters and was doing exorcism to welcome the New Year.
Depending on the shrine, some shrines say that it is good not only for the day of Setsubun, but also from the New Year to Setsubun.

◆◇ Meaning of ‘Ehoumaki’ and how to eat it◇◆

‘Ehoumaki’, the birthplace of Kansai(western Japan) in Japan, is a sushi which you can eat on the day of popular Setsubun that is also being eaten in Kanto(eastern Japan).
We will eat it the same as Mame Maki, on the night of Setsubun.

◆how to eat ‘Ehoumaki’

Ehoumaki volumes have the meaning of “involvement in the happiness”, and we will start cutting without cutting it.
The meaning of eating all without cutting is meaning “do not cut off”.
Also, without talking, while singing a wish in your heart, you face the direction of Ehou and eat it.
If you utter a word by the time you finish eating all, your luck will escape. It is said that a wish will come true by silently holding a wish on your head while eating it.

◆◇ In the direction of ‘Ehou maki’◇◆

Ehou is said to have a “goddess deity” who is responsible for the happiness of the year, and it is a good aim.
In 2017, “North Northwest slightly right”.

In addition, depending on the area, at Setsubun, we eat sardines, soba, konnyaku, whale and crabs.
Because the origin of eating crabs will pinch the demon’s neck with a sharp scissors.

Ehou’s direction changes every year, but it is one of the following four directions at 90 degree intervals.
It is some of the zodiac that sets this Hirakata.

Somewhat, “Kou・ Otsu ・ Hei・Tei ・ Bo ・ Ki ・Kou ・Shin・Jin・Ki “There are ten kinds.
This is determined by the last digit of the Christian era.

Kou: 4, Otsu: 5, Hei: 6, Tei:7,Bo: 8, Ki: 9,Kou: 0, Shin: 1,Jin :2, Ki : 3

Each corresponds to the following directions.

Kou, Otsu : Somewhat east northeast
Bo, Kou : South West Slightly right
Hei, Shin, Bo, Ki : Southern south Slightly right
Tei , Jin : North North-West slightly right

Since this year is 2017, it is “North Northwest slightly right” of Ding.

◆◇ How to Mame maki ◇◆

Setsubun is the day before the beginning of spring that spring reaches, meaning “seasonal split”. In the past as a new year, there was a meaning like New Year’s Eve.
Also, at the turn of the season it was said that it was easy for evils to enter, and before the new year a festival to pay for evil had been taking place.
One of them is Mame-maki(bean-bean).

The bean was said to be “a dwarf of grain is inhabited”, and it was used not only for bean mulberry as sacred but also for a shrine.
Also, in Japanese pronunciation, it is said that the kanji “Mametsu” to destroy evil is hit, and it is said that you will purge demons (to destroy demons) by spreading beans.

In the era of Uda,(Emperor No. 59,817-931) the devil of Kurama mountain came out and sealed the hole of the demon by praying to destroy the capital, crushing the demon’s eyes with Mitsuishi Mitsuyoshi’s roasted beans (soybeans), escaped the calamity It is said that the historical legend is starting.
Also, there is an anecdote that when a demon comes out, with the announcement of Bishamonten, they scattered the beans and killed demons.

Bean Maki is the same as Ebata Volume, but it is shed on the night of Setsubun. The demon is coming because it is said that it is night.

◆ What to prepare

1. Fuku Mame (Happiness beans) (roasted beans) or peanut
2. Face musk

Beans are common in Setsubun, but there are areas where peanuts are used recently. By the way, peanuts are done with a shell. It seems that many customs to sprinkle peanuts are found in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kagoshima and Miyazaki.
Origin of customs of peanuts in Hokkaido has spread to other areas afterwards for reasonable reason that “you can eat after picking beans in the snow afterwards”.

◆ Bean Maki Procedure

1. Decide who to sprinkle beans

It is the role of the owner of the family, or it is said that the auspicious is better when the elderly, old man, troubled people do.

2. How to make bean-maki

In the image to drive demons out of their houses, they sprinkle with a loud voice saying”Devils out, happiness in!! ”
In “Ogres are Outside ~!”, I will throw out towards the outside of the house (from the room to the entrance).
In “Devils out!”, we will throw into the house (room).
We will go through this from the back of the room to the entrance.

When the bean-maki is over, We will pick up the mound beans one more than our own age. One thing to eat is that it means “New Year’s Exorcism.”

◆◇ Iwashi decorating meaning ◇◆

It is supposed to be the birthplace of the Kansai(western Japan) era during the Heian era(794-1192) to decorate sardines by sticking sardines on the branches of the Hiiragi tree.
Start decorating from the day of Setsubun, remove it the next day.

On the day of Setsubun, a demon will appear at the time of Mame-maki, but this sardine is to drive away the demons, and with the intense smell of burning sardines, they drive away the demons.
In addition, there are sharp thorns in Hiroshi who stumble on sardines, stabbing the eye of an approaching ogre, so they will exterminate.
It is also said that you will purify the body’s evil. Sardicine contains abundant EPA and DHA, it makes the blood smooth, prevents myocardial infarction and blood vessels.
DHA also has the effect of activating the function of the brain and nerves.

In Kansai(western Japan) you stab it in the branch of Hiiragi, but in the suburbs of Tokyo there is also a place to decorate the picture of soybeans excluding seeds called bean leaves in addition to the hiroki.

◆◇ How to throw sardines ◇◆

Serdine is thrown away as it is for decoration. The way to throw it away,

・ Wrap with white paper, clean with salt and throw it away
・ Fill in the front door
・ Have your fish burn in the shrine
・ Grill until ash and serve at the entrance
